Criminal Defense Lawyer

A criminal defense lawyer is a lawyer who defends you in court. Anyone needing legal representation would do themselves well to look for a defense attorney to help them. However, media, movies, and TV shows have created many misconceptions about this type of lawyer. These rumors could cause you to shy away from hiring one.

We want to debunk these misconceptions and share with you the truth.

Misconception #1 – Public defenders are just as effective.

The government provides a public defender to people who cannot afford legal counsel. We are not saying public defenders are bad, but they should be the last resort. They are often underpaid, overworked, and may not care as much about the outcome of your case because they are handling so many at once. Public defenders have good intentions, but the way the system works, they are not always the best option for legal advice. They are not the same as a criminal defense lawyer and have very limited availability to work on your case properly. If you can afford a criminal defense lawyer, then get one.

Misconception #2 – They are all the same.

You may hope that they are all the same, but in reality it is just like any other industry. Some are better than others and experience plays a huge role in a lawyer’s ability to represent you. The lawyers who have dealt with (and won) more cases generally understand the law better. They know how the legal process works and how to get you the best results. You can ask a lawyer for their track record. This is an excellent way to determine if they which lawyer can best represent you in court.

Misconception #3 – You need much money to hire a good one.

People believe you have to be filthy rich to hire a great lawyer. This is rarely the case, and the price tag will not necessarily tell you if a lawyer is good or not. As we said in Misconception #2, it is about the experience, not the amount they charge that determines if a lawyer is good at their job.

Misconception #4 – Criminal Defense Lawyers are shady.

Hollywood has painted a bad picture for a criminal defense lawyer. They are not shady and want to help their clients as much as possible. They also understand they are not above the law and most criminal defense attorneys will not resort to bad practices to win a case. Attorneys take an oath to abide the law and ignoring their oath can have dire repercussions. They studied for years and took one of the hardest exams in the world just to become a lawyer. They will not give this all away by doing something illegal or immoral just to win one case.
