Multiple DWI offender facing murder charges after deadly drunk driving accident

The Fort Bend County, Texas, Grand Jury recently indicted a 24-year-old man on multiple charges based on a December 2011 drunk driving accident that killed  Nancy Krenek, a mother of six.

According to an article from abc 13, Sean Michael Adams is facing charges including intoxicated assault and murder. Although it’s relatively uncommon for a drunk driver to face a murder charge in Texas, prosecutors say they chose to proceed with the murder charge because the defendant had three prior DWI charges. Two of these were in Fort Bend County. The other was in Harris County, Texas – which, per WTRK, leads the country in alcohol-related driving deaths.

The deceased woman’s husband questions the effectiveness of a legal system that allowed Adams to even be out on the road after his drunk driving history. Although Adams had spent some time in the local jail, he was never imprisoned for his previous DWI charges, despite the fact that he was on probation when he received his second DWI in 2010. Adams did not have a valid driver’s license when the accident that killed Krenek occurred. As of February 14, Adams remained at the Fort Bend County jail.

It’s not entirely clear why Adams was not sentenced to prison time after his three prior DWIs. Drunk driving charges are generally taken very seriously in Texas, and according to the Texas Department of Transportation, a third DWI conviction could result in two to ten years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Even a first-time DWI offender in Texas could be subject to a sentence including up to six months behind bars. If you’ve been charged with a DWI in Fort Bend, it’s essential to hire a top Fort Bend DUI defense lawyer who has the skills necessary to defend your DWI case, negotiate a lesser charge, and minimize the consequences of your drunk driving incident.
