Martin High School Teacher Gets Arrested for Dwi

It’s easy to think that once the school day or school year is over what you do after hours can’t affect you. However, as one teacher reminded us, how you conduct yourself outside your school is just as important as how you conduct yourself in your school.

Allen Tijerina was driving home one Friday night at midnight when he was pulled over for a traffic violation along Bob Bullock Loop. According to the Department of Public Safety, Tijerina displayed signs of intoxication and was directed to take the field sobriety test. He failed. Tijerina refused to provide a blood sample and was arrested for DWI: driving while intoxicated. Following the arrest, he posted a $1,500 bail to the Webb County Jail.

Tijerina is a chemistry teacher at Martin High as well as a Laredo Community College Board member. The Laredo Independent School District is reviewing the information on the DWI arrest. He has been an LCC Position 4 member of the Board of Trustees since 2012. Terms typically last six years, and his seat will be up for reelection soon.

Tijerina is still teaching chemistry at Martin High School while the Laredo Independent School District investigates the matter. According to LMT Online the LCC declined to comment on the issue. However, LMT Online did look into the LCC’s policy on board vacancies removal and found that Tijerina could be removed from his position for “intoxication on or off duty caused by drinking an alcoholic beverage.”

Allen Tijerina’s life as a teacher  could be over, all because of a DWI.

Your dream job of teaching could fade away because you thought DWI was “no big deal.”

The Punishments of a Dwi

  • Up to 180 days in jail
  • A $2,000 fine
  • A driver’s license suspension of 90 to 365 days

Depending on how many offenses you’ve had in the past, the punishments could get worse. Imagine your dream of becoming a teacher fading away all because of a DWI charge.
