Houston Police Officer Arrested for DWI

A Houston police officer, Roy Alexander Marquez, was involved in an accident in Pasadena early Sunday morning and has been charged with drunken driving and unlawful carrying of a weapon.  Vance Mitchell, public information officer for the Pasadena Police Department, said blood test results showed that HPD Sgt. Roy Alexander Marquez, 37, was intoxicated at the time of an accident he had on Red Bluff and Beltway 8 Sunday October 16th at 1 a.m.

According to the crash report, three witnesses observed a white Tahoe run through a red light, roll over and strike another car. There were no serious injuries reported at the scene. Marquez was the driver of the white Tahoe.

According to court documents, the Pasadena police officer dispatched to the scene smelled alcohol in Marquez’s breath and observed that Marquez had red, watery eyes, slurred speech and a sway. He failed several field sobriety tests.

Mitchell said it was a mandatory blood-draw weekend but Marquez refused to have his blood drawn. According to the criminal complaint, the PPD officer took Marquez to HPD’s central facility downtown and got a search warrant for his blood.

Marquez was then transported to St. Joseph’s hospital where a sample of his blood was obtained and tested for alcohol content. His blood alcohol level was 0.127 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent. According to the court document, Marquez stated that he had had two beers at a friend’s house. Sunday was Marquez’s birthday.

HPD spokesman Victor Senties said Marquez, who was last assigned to traffic enforcement, was relieved from duty on Monday, October 17th pending the investigation and is in custody. Marquez, who has been with HPD since May 2001, has been charged with first offense DWI and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Marqeuz’s Bond was set at $1,500.

While it is not illegal to keep a weapon in the car in Texas, it becomes an offense in connection with a violation of the law.  Texas police officers have been cracking down on DWI violations with greater vigilance because of how many violations there are in Texas.
